Busy Bumble Bee

Posted in Articles, Cool Stuff, Personal by yaustar on October 30, 2007

I have been right royally busy at work which is the main reason why I haven’t updated this for a while. It is times like these I really wished there were more hours in the day. However, there are a few cool things I have picked up over the last couple of days that I thought I share.

AnimeSuki’s MPlayer OSX: If you work with me, you should have at least heard me bitch about quality of softsubs on VLC on the Mac. Looks like I wasn’t the only one and some guys at AnimeSuki have compiled a version of MPlayer that supports most MKVs released by FanSubs, therefore I am a happy bunny to have true support now.

Mr. Jabberwocky’s Pssst!: A collection of posts made at the GP32X forums Jabberwocky’s progress reports on his development on a game. While I question some parts of his coding style, I can’t deny the amount of detail inserted. It gives a clear idea on the steps and blocks taken to build a game using SDL and getting it finished.

Where the **** is the Delete key?!

Posted in Personal by yaustar on September 25, 2007

As you can probably guess, I have now got my MacBook :) . Apart from some minor annoyances such as the lack of a delete key (Alt+Backspace) and a ‘#’ key (Alt+3), my overall experience with the OS has been great. Installing and removing applications is simple and straightforward, Expose is fantastic and everything is GUI driven. I haven’t needed to open the terminal window once to do anything yet. Compare that to what I had to do in Ubuntu to get certain aspects running (e.g. playing videos over a network share with skipping), this is a dream to use.

I am still on the hunt for MacOSX versions of the common software that I used and I haven’t yet tried development on Parallels/Windows with it yet but I can’t imagine it being much different.

Just for a bit of gun, here is a video of Mac killed my inner child YouTube video.

Aiming for a MacBook

Posted in Personal by yaustar on September 17, 2007

I have finally caved in, I will be getting a MacBook in the near future and getting rid of the one I am on now. As much as I enjoyed using Linux as my main OS, there are too many little things that keep bugging me such as needing to compile from source for a particular program or hardware not being fully supported. While the inner geek of me doesn’t mind, I frankly don’t have the time nor the motivation for it anymore.

Macs are generally one specifically line of hardware with a single flavour Unix based OS should in theory mean little (or better yet no) problems unlike what most people have when switching to Linux. I will also be selling off my main desktop PC since it isn’t being used any more plus some old parts.

In short, I am clearing out my crap from home and switching to Apple :p.
